Mhaule condemns lazy generation

Clearly, the new generation want to get things for free, they don't want to aim high and work hard in their studies.

BARBERTON – Democracy gave birth to a lazy nation as the new generation is acting very reluctantly when it comes to focusing on their studies, instead they indulge in substance abuse and embark on service delivery protests, demanding RDP houses from government.

These were the utterances of the MEC for education, Ms Reginah Mhaule when she raised a serious concern regarding pupils who are allegedly smoking nyaope on the premises of Barberton Secondary School.

“Young people must understand the history of this country and don’t stay in the past, but shape their future. We cannot blame the apartheid era forever.

I get emotional when I see young people in the streets demanding RDP houses from government.
“Clearly, the new generation want to get things for free, they don’t want to aim high and work hard in their studies,” she added.

She said that young people had to pull themselves together and focus on their studies to improve their lives. “Education is the key that opens all doors and the vehicle to change inequality is education, not nyaope,” she said.

Smuggling and smoking nyaope on the school premises are not the only problems that are experienced by educators here. The late coming of learners is another problem that needs serious attention, “As a department, we are going to beef up security by installing a new fence and the gate must be monitored so that those masterminds of nyaope and dagga don’t get access easily to do their business at the school,” she vowed.

This publication also learnt that Mhaule’s visit to the school was part of fulfilling her promise to a pupil, Tshepiso Mobeng, who requested her to visit and check the bad state of some of the buildings.

This publication noted that some of the classes had broken windows. Furniture was dilapidated and the state of the laboratory was appalling. Some of the equipment was lying on the dirty floor in a classroom that could be mistaken for a pig sty.

The department vowed to address the issue of the infrastructure as Mhaule will spend Mandela Day at this school this year.
