Oliver Mtukudzi loves Mbombela – win his CD here

With over 60 albums to his name coupled with hits such as “Neria”, “Wasakara”, and “Tozeza Baba”, to name but a few, this luminary is proof that music is a universal language.

Making timeless music which appeals to both the young and the old seems to be a daunting task, but the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi makes it look like slitting a hot knife through butter.

With over 60 albums to his name coupled with hits such as “Neria”, “Wasakara”, and “Tozeza Baba”, to name but a few, this luminary is proof that music is a universal language.

Speaking to Mpumalanga News about his One Night at 60 release and the newly Gospel Collection, Mtukudzi says his songs have always been centered on self-discipline and fearing God.

“I started singing in 1975 and I have 64 albums to my name, but it still feels like yesterday and new every time. I would always have one or two gospel songs in all my albums, and the rest would be about discipline because that’s one trait that will get you far as a person,” said Mr Oliver Mtukudzi.

In most cases, one would not understand the lyrics, but that doesn’t stop his fans from buying his albums and following his music the way they do. According to Mtukudzi, this is because his songs carry a certain purpose and he doesn’t write for a certain country or culture, he writes for the heart.

“As long as there are people, there will be things to talk about, and as long as there are things to talk about, there will be something to sing about. I get my inspiration from the people around me and everything that happens. Music should be about life and hope, it should go beyond race, age, culture and anything that seems like a restricting factor,” he added.

He went on to express his gratitude to South Africans for supporting and following his music.

“I feel honored that the purpose is fulfilled, my music has gone beyond boarders, and that’s because of the support I get from the people. I’m really grateful for that; South Africa has become my home. I love the people of Mbombela, they are very warm and welcoming, I performed there not so long ago and I will definitely be coming back.”

Mtukudzi will be releasing his latest project in which he will feature South African great, Hugh Masekela.
