Local politician a victim of crime

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash from his home. Maunye does not believe that the incident was politically motivated.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – Bushbuckridge Residents Association Member of Legislature, Mr Cleopas Maunye, fell victim to crime on Sunday night when his home was broken into and his family robbed at gunpoint.

“I was in Mbombela celebrating my birthday with my brothers when I received a call from my niece, although she said nothing. I had to call back, that’s when I heard the conversation between the criminals and my sisters about money. I immediately called the police to inform them about the robbery,” said Maunye.

He added that he was not satisfied by the response he had received from the police after reporting the incident.

“It’s just a five-minute drive from the police station to my home, but it took them almost an hour to get there. They got there the same time as us, and we were driving from Mbombela. I believe they would have caught the culprits, had they responded swiftly to our call,” he added.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash from his home. Maunye does not believe that the incident was politically motivated.

“They took my mom’s R1 000 and my brother’s undisclosed amount of cash from his business. I don’t believe it has to do with politics though, it was just criminals trying their luck. I also think they noticed that there was no man at home at the time, and they took advantage of that.

“My sisters tried running after them when they left, and two shots were fired in the street. Luckily, none of them were hurt,” added Maunye.
