Parents halt teaching at Matsulu

Mkhatshwa says this will go on as long as the department chooses to turn a blind eye on the safety of their children.

MATSULU – Learning and teaching activities were forced to be put on hold in Funindlela Primary school today as learners blocked the entrance to the school. The parents are aggravated by the condition of the school since it was hit and damaged by a storm not so long ago.

According to the chairperson of the School Governing Body (SGB) Mr Timothy Mkhatshwa, the department was served with a notice of two weeks, through the circuit.

“We wrote to the circuit and requested that the department of education must fix the roof and overall condition of the school because it poses danger to our children.

“To our surprise, no one came back to us with any sort of communication after that, we are not even sure if the letter was read or thrown into the bin,” said Mkhatshwa.

Mkhatshwa says this will go on as long as the department chooses to turn a blind eye on the safety of their children.

“These are our children, and we take priority in their safety and hope the relevant departments will join us in that,” he added.

The department of education says it doesn’t have full information on the matter, but it’s currently being investigated.

“We don’t have much of information regarding the school condition, we are currently looking into the matter,” said the department’s Gerald Sambo.

More details on this story will be made available on the next printed edition of Mpumalanga News.
