Second chance matric programme launched

This will include the learners that sat for, and failed the supplementary examinations in February and March 2016.

Learners who did not pass the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in 2015 will be given a second chance to complete matric.

Basic Education Minister, Mrs Angie Motshekga, officially launched the Second Chance Matric Programme aimed at offering young people, who have failed to meet the requirements of the NSC, a second chance to obtain their formal qualification.

The Programme seeks to provide support to learners who wrote the 2015 matric examinations and qualified to write one or two subjects in the supplementary examinations in February and March 2016, as well as progressed learners writing the June 2016 examinations (these learners opted to modularise and did not write all 6 subjects in 2015).

This will include the learners that sat for, and failed the supplementary examinations in February and March 2016. Support for candidates who failed to meet the requirements of the NSC post 2008 will be planned for in 2016 and rollout will take place in 2017.  Candidates may register for the support programme at their nearest district office.

Support will be provided to supplementary learners through a variety of interventions, including, face to face tuition by Grade 12 teachers from best performing schools with an excellent track record (for the pilot this will be offered in two districts per province and two venues per district); multimedia broadcasting solutions from the existing telematics centres in the provinces; Internet Broadcasting Project (IBP) in the Free State; Internet resources and printed material.

Learners will also be able to access the Mindset content and broadcast station via OpenView; and decoders and satellite dishes will be provided to four venues in each province. The Departmental Facebook page with DBE and PED subject specialists will be available for learners to post questions and receive support.

Learners may access the internet resources from Vodacom Centres in all provinces as well as Teacher Development Centres, libraries etc. All resources and information relating to venues have been uploaded onto a separate link on the DBE website and Thutong Portals which learners may access.
