MLM cautions parents against drowning

Mpumalanga, alongside other provinces, has been experiencing unbearable heat lately, in vernacular; one would say ‘likhipha umkhovu etjeni’.

MBOMBELA – The Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) has warned parents to keep an eye on children around swimming pools, especially now that it’s during school holidays.

“Temperatures are ranging between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, with some parts even reaching up to 45. Such weather conditions can easily lead to increased drownings as our children run to rivers, streams and dams to cool off.

With the school holidays upon us, we want to appeal to parents to be vigilant and know where the little ones are so as to prevent them running to un-kept ponds for a swim which could lead to them drowning,” said Mr Joseph Ngala, Spokepserson for MLM.

It has since been reported that the heat wave is expected to hit Mbombela for the rest of the week. Ngala has appealed for the parents to keep caution for the rest of Spring and Summer, and not just this week.

“Now that experts have indicated that the worst is yet to come, especially when we look at the hottest month of the year, January. This is when heat wave periods occur frequently.

We want to see our children safe and sound through the heat, and we depend highly on parents to keep a sharp eye on them,” he concluded.
