Traditional roadshow to teach youth about culture

"This is a way of encouraging them not to forget where they come from and not to undermine their culture"

LUPHISI – A local traditional group called Batukulu Bagogo is determined to teach young people about their culture.

Mpumalanga News learnt that the group will host Batukulu Bagogo Performing Arts Roadshow on October 10 as part of reminding young people about their background as Africans.

In an interview with this publication, the founder, Mandlakayise Maseko said,

“We want to give learners from different schools around Ehlanzeni a platform to showcase their talent in traditional dance and music.
“The reason why we are hosting this event is because we want to remind the new generation about their culture, because when we face reality they don’t know who they are because they have adapted to the Western life,” he explained.

He indicated that by reviving such activities in the community it will keep young people busy so that they don’t indulge in substance abuse and the rate of teenage pregnancy will be reduced.

Successful performers will receive awards and trophies.

“This is a way of encouraging them not to forget where they come from and not to undermine their culture.

When we talk about culture, it is not only about our traditional attire, but it also plays a very crucial role when it comes to respect and how we must behave or conduct ourselves so that we can become better people in our society,” he added.

Maseko is working with various schools around the region which includes Sidungeni and Khutsalani, to name two.

He said his biggest wish was to take these groups on a world tour, showcasing our rich diverse culture to the whole world.
