LIVE FEED: Fossil discovery two years in the making

The Rising Star cave is the latest exploration site to provide more clues around human existence.

Researchers and scientists from the University of the Witwatersrand have been working on uncovering their latest fossil discovery since 2013.

The imminent announcement of the fossil discovery is due to take place at 11am today. According to National Geographic, Dr Lee Berger and her team began the explorations in November 2013, delving into the Rising Star cave to retrieve the remains of what is believed to be one of the largest fossil hominins.

Dr Berger’s team was featured in the media in 2010 for their discovery of the species now known as Australopithecus sediba. This discovery was made at the Malapa Cave, several miles from the Rising Star cave, also located in the Cradle of Humankind.
