That radio guy gives a glimpse into his life

Rise FM has introduced its new line-up and the breakfast show has a new host, Makhosi Khoza.

Mpumalanga News gets the low-down from this energetic DJ.

1. Who is Makhosi Khoza?

A dreamer, a father, a husband, a brother, a torch-bearer, a trailblazer who loves a good chuckle and the simple things in life

2. We hear now and then that you speak siSwati, and original siSwati, are you from Swaziland?

I was born and bred in Mbabane, Swaziland.

3. How long have you been on radio?

I started radio in earnest in 1992, as a public broadcaster in Swaziland, but commercial radio in 1995 in Durban. That makes it 20 years. The stations include Capitol Radio, East Coast Radio, Gagasi 99.5FM, 702, Radio 2000, Megazone hit radio, the list goes on.

4. What time does Makhosi Khoza usually wake up on a normal working day?

04:00 and then I have a major fight with my pillow and the snooze until I win.

5. A few DJs use stage names like DJ so-and-so, why Makhosi Khoza?

Simplicity and being content with the name, it’s just a label for you to build a brand underneath. But in other spheres you might find me using the tag “That Radio Guy”, which is practically who I’ve become.

6. Family? Anything you want to tell us?

My wife insists that I state that I’m happily married, my sister lives and lectures in the US, one brother is an attorney and the other is an entrepreneur, they both still live in Swaziland. My daughter is named after her mother, Neo.

7. Future ambitions in radio?

Running a station would be an interesting challenge, but it will depend on my mood and fashion sense, wearing suits 24/7 isn’t for everyone. And a working holiday on radio somewhere foreign would be welcome.

8. What’s the motto that you live by?

Think, act, inspire!

9. Rise FM Breakfast with Makhosi Khoza – what is your highlight on your own show?

Every day presents a new challenge, when an idea or thought is executed as perfectly as I envisioned in my head, then my job is done. Other times ideas just run with you and you hang on for dear life because it makes for great radio.

10. Who would you want to interview next on your show?

Oprah Winfrey, Winnie Mandela, or anyone interesting who will make the memoir I’m busy writing to be fantastic.
