MATAFFIN – The continued disputes over land ownership in this area near the Mbombela Stadium have resulted in some residents deviating from the ruling party, the ANC, to join the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

This happened recently when a group of residents signed up with the EFF. The new recruits include members of the local business forum, the working committee and concerned groups and 85-year-old Mr Karilos Mpinga who recently recieived a new two-room house from the forum.

All of this comes after three houses and a tuck shop, apparently belonging to a certain Nkosi who allegedly poses as the rightful owner and chief of the portion of land including Woodhouse 308JT, were allegedly set on fire by angry members of the community on May 31.
This happened a week after the residents had marched against the illegal selling of land by Nkosi. During the march, the community demanded Nkosi to stop selling the land to invaders.
They also gave him seven days to leave the area. “He came here and claims he is the prince and the land belongs to his family, but he has no proof for that,” said members of the community.

Police opened cases of malicious damage to property and public violence but no arrests had been made this far. However, a few members belonging to the forum were arrested on June 11 immediately after handing out school jerseys at John Mdluli Primary School.
This angered some of the members of the forum who claimed that the arrests had been unfair and unjust as the matter over the land issue was still pending in the Pretoria High Court.
The organised crime unit continues with its investigation into the recent arrest in Mataffin
