Pupils are proud to be African

Africa Day got a whole new meaning for the learners of Nelspruit Primary School, when the little ones went all out to celebrate.

MBOMBELA – Africa Day got a whole new meaning for the learners of Nelspruit Primary School, when the little ones went all out to celebrate.

From plays at the assembly, to creating a colourful isle for guests to walk through, where all the different traditional attire was on display.

The Department of Education spent the morning at the school and was impressed by the efforts of the learners.

“We would really like to commend the school for being one of those that spearheads diversity in its curriculum. This is one of the 30 schools that was chosen for the programme in the province, and it is doing very well,” said Ms Lucy Moyane, deputy director general for curriculum in the education department.

Moyane encouraged the pupils to learn the African anthem, and urged them to embrace one another’s languages as Africans. She attended a grade-two class together with her entourage in which Ms Gogo Mabuza gave the learners a siSwati lesson.

“The diversity of this school is really overwhelming, it’s good to see them learning siSwati from such an early age. I noticed a certain Willem talking in siSwati, such things make one proud to be part of the new and diverse Africa.

We shouldn’t just talk about it on paper, it must be practical, and we have seen it here today,” Mabuza added.
The school governing body (SGB) was also present to celebrate the day with the children.

“We don’t live in isolation as human beings, our children should embrace and understand that. They should know that there are many ways to deal with conflict, not in the way we see it done in the media today.

The learners here understand one another in their differences as Africans, and they look so beautiful and their attire, we really give credit to the teachers for going all out in ensuring the success of the celebrations,” said Mr Muneer Shaik, deputy chairperson of the school’s SGB.
