Mec welcomes the arrest of suspects

MEC applauds police following an arrest.

“The swift arrest of two suspects linked to crimes committed against tourists around Hazyview should be welcomed by all and sundry as it restores the community’s faith in the work of Justice, Crime, Prevention and Security Cluster,” this is according to Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe.

The first suspect was arrested for robbery which occurred at Kruger Park Lodge last week Thursday, 17 October 2013. On the same day, another suspect was arrested for robbery and rape of two women at Tatenda Guest House.

Both suspects appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court yesterday on October 21.

Shongwe is calling for the urgent finalisation of these cases.

He says the outcome must help in dealing with the behaviour of dangerous criminals in our communities.

He further states that people of the province have the responsibility to protect tourists and residents.

“We should not at any point allow criminals to chase away people who have come to enjoy the leisure of our beautiful province. Tourism is critical as it enhances the local economy and therefore the attack on tourists is a direct attack on our economy,” Shongwe said.

He, however, remains concerned about the spate of attacks at lodges and he is therefore reiterating his call to lodge and hotel owners and managers to enhance security at their establishments and other tourist destinations.

He also pleaded with the owners to work closely with the police in order to ensure safety of their visitors.

This follows another attack on tourists which happened on Sunday, 20 October 2013. Four criminals who were reportedly wearing balaclavas robbed two guests in another lodge in Hazyview. It is believed that the robbers held the couple at gunpoint.
