More than a thousand vehicles impounded during Easter

According to the department during the operations that were conducted throughout the province between April 1 and 6,1078 vehicles were impounded.

MBOMBELA – Following the unveiling of the 2015 Easter Arrive Alive campaign in Dwarsloop on March 27, the department of public works, roads and transport staged a series of law enforcement operations aimed at promoting safety on the roads in order to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities during the Easter holidays.

According to the department during the operations that were conducted throughout the province between April 1 and 6,1078 vehicles were impounded.

“Out of the total, 1001 were minibuses whilst 77 were buses that were ferrying passengers without valid operating licenses amongst other offences,” said the department’s Mr David Nkambule.

Nkambule further stated that all the impounded vehicles were released after paying an admission of guilty at the police station by the driver ranging to an amount of between R 2 000 and R 2 500 depending on the fine issued.

“A total of 5110 buses and minibuses were stopped and screened for compliance in terms of the National Land Transport Act, Act 5 of 2009,” he added.

The Department has further urged all motorists to be always vigilant on the road. –
