Investigations underway after boy was shot during protest

However community members claim that the boy was shot by the police while they were trying to disperde the protestors.

CASTEEL – Police have opened a case of murder following the discovery of a 15-year-old learner’s body with a gunshot wound last Thursday, 26 February 2015, at approximately 12:30, alongside the R40.

According to preliminary report at the disposal of police, the community of Casteel have embarked in a violent protest for the past week which have caused the busiest R40 Road to be  inaccessible on a daily basis.

The residents used trucks and buses to barricade the road.

“Currently, it is unclear how and who shot at the boy hence an investigation into the matter is underway,” stated the police.

However community members claim that the boy was shot by the police while they were trying to disperde the protestors.

The police management in the province have said that in the meantime they have drawn  in the attention of the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) as the authority responsible to investigate the conduct of the police.

No one has been arrested yet and a post-mortem will be conducted soon.
