Over 6 000 traffic fines issued

The fines were issued during week-long operations across the province which were conducted from January 5 to 11.

MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga traffic officials continued where they left off in 2014 when they issued 6 188 traffic fines to motorists for violating traffic regulations.

The fines were issued during week-long operations across the province which were conducted from January 5 to 11.

Community safety, security and liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe, hailed the officers saying their continued hard work would assist to bring errant drivers to book, thereby saving lives.

He encouraged them to carry on with the same vigour in order to impact positively on government’s road safety initiatives.

Fines were issued for offences ranging from speeding and failure to obey traffic rules to driving without proper documentation and driving a vehicle with defects.
A total of 79 motorists were also arrested while 73 motorists were summoned for failing to pay their outstanding fines, one was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol; two drivers were further nabbed for excessive speed and others for overloading.

A total of 243 vehicles were discontinued while 215 were impounded for not being roadworthy.
