The atmosphere was electrifying and filled with excitement when the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport celebrated the Heritage Day at the Government Complex in Nelspruit yesterday, September 23.

The atmosphere was electrifying and filled with excitement when the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport celebrated the Heritage Day at the Government Complex in Nelspruit yesterday, September 23.

Officials within the department came in numbers wearing their traditional attires waiting for MEC Dumisile Nhlengethwa to deliver her heritage message.

Nhlengethwa delivered a heritage message where she appealed to staff to uphold their tradition and culture.

“Government converted what is previously known as Shaka Day into Heritage Day, so that all cultures are catered, recognised and embraced. During the day, we expect everyone to showcase their African and practise their tradition,” she explained.

African music, cuisines, craft and traditional dances featured highly during the day. Officials within the department showcased their colourful African, Indian and Afrikaans culture as they embark on various activities and played games such as Ingcatfu, Morabaraba, eyes open and many more, spicing and lacing up the day with delicious African cuisine.

Employees in the communications section were already up and running on Monday morning September 22 as they were already seen in African attire.

The Heritage Month is celebrated throughout the Month where people across all spectrums in society are encouraged to celebrate their culture and diversity.
