Academy scoops top prizes from Annual Skills Development Summit

The Academy received the two awards for its e-learning project which uses 21st century technology to help under privileged schools to uplift their standards of teaching and learning.

The Ligbron Academy of Technology received top awards from the Seventh Annual Skills Development Summit.

The academy was awarded for being the Best Innovative Training Programme and the Best Public Sector Training programme on August5-6 at the International Convention Centre in Pretoria.

The Annual Skills Development Summit is held to deliberate on the shortage of skills in the country and come up with ways to resolve these challenges.

The Summit has since taken a new dimension which is, focusing on the practical issues involved in enhancing skills level in all sectors of the economy.

The Academy received the two awards for its e-learning project which uses 21st century technology to help under privileged schools to uplift their standards of teaching and learning.

The e-learning project is a live transmission of the Mathematics and Physical Science lessons at Ligbron Academy, which enable learners and teachers from the other schools to participate in the lessons and pose questions to the leading teacher.

The following six schools participates in this project; Camden Combined, Umzimvelo Agriculture School, Ermelo Combined, Ithafa Secondary, Masizakhe Secondary and Ligbron Academy of Technology which is leading the project.

The sharing of lessons takes place between the schools by using Smart boards and Brigit conferencing software whereby digital cameras for live video streaming between schools situated at a radius of 7-45 kilometres from each other.

The 2014 Skills Development summit has for the first time outlined the importance of developing and harnessing skills in the country by focusing on existing projects by government aimed at improving the skills of public servants.
