Top cop prioritises children and women

Nelwy appointed hardworking and determined female station commander promises full commitment and visibility..

ELUKWATINI – The local police station finally has a new permanent hard-working, passionate and determined female station commander, Col Baby Masango.

This woman of substance is among the nine members of the police who have been promoted to higher positions in the province. She has served as a noble and reliable member of the SAPS for the past 27 years.

Asked about her priority list at the station, she said she would work hard to eradicate any form of abuse against children and women in the area and promote the well-being of members at the station.

She would also engage community structures in the fight against crime in Elukwatini, Aramberg, Mooiplaas and surrounding areas within the station’s jurisdiction.

She also pledged her commitment to participation in community outreach programmes and to engage with the people, especially women, encouraging them to report all forms of abuse to the police station regardless of the perpetrator’s relationship with the woman.

“We will meet women, provide information and empower them on how to behave and protect themselves and their children from being victims of crime. They should be responsible and know the whereabouts of their children at all times. They must be role models and help government in the moral regeneration initiatives among
the youth,” she says.

Masango began her career as a junior constable in Middelburg decades ago, was then promoted to senior positions in various police stations in the province including Volksrust, Piet Retief, and Delmas where she was at times asked to act as station commander until she attained that position in Balfour.

She draws inspiration from her seniors and brigadiers. “My role model is Brig Sanna Mashiane who works in the province. He pushed me and encouraged me to participate in many projects in the sector.

One of them was the Amakhosi bilateral in which our project was chosen among the best and our province came first nationally. That’s when I realised that hard work does indeed pay.”

Masango also thanks Jehova-jireh for continuing to do amazing things in her life.
