Kamanga defeats Mandawe

DR Congo boxer Paul Kamanga defeated South Africa’s Boitumelo Mandawe on points to claim the vacant WBA Pan African junior welterweight title in Emperor’s Palace on Tuesday night.

Despite his reach and height advantages, Mandawe allowed his speedy opponent to dictate the action. Kamanga moved in and out, scoring with his left jab all along.

Mandawe missed with wild punches and struggled to establish himself in the battle. He also refused to shake hands with Kamanga’s cornerman Anton Gilmore, ending the bout on a rather sour and unsporting note.

Judge Joseph Chaane scored the 12-rounder 117-112, Tony Nyangiwe called it 116-112 and Wally Snowball had it 117-111.

Kamanga improved his record to 12-0 with 8 wins inside the distance. Mandawe’s dropped to 14-4; 10.
