University of Mpumalanga and Ehlanzeni District continue the fight against GBV
The university students and various other stakeholders recently embarked on a marched to raise awareness against this social evil.
As they continue to create a safe environment, the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and the Ehlanzeni District Municipality hosted their fifth annual event for creating safe and inclusive spaces for all on campus, on September 20, under the theme ‘Addressing sexual harassment in higher education.’
The event aimed to raise awareness and address issues related to gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual harassment in institutions of higher education.

As part of this event, the students and various stakeholders marched around the campus.
Speaking at the event, Prof Moses Mbewe said institutions of higher learning should be active in the fight against gender-based violence.
“Our job as a university is not just to teach and lecture. Our job is to holistically train individuals, especially young men to respect women and everybody in society.”
Delivering the keynote address, Kim Maruping of the Sol Plaatjie University said students must not be ashamed to report GBV.

“Do not justify the actions of the perpetrator. Always make sure that you report GBV, even if it is committed by staff members or lecturers.”
A candle-lighting ceremony was held in remembrance of those who have died due to GBV.
