Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture empowers local farmers against veld fires

According to the Dardlea's spokesperson, Zanele Shabangu, the aim of the meeting with these farmers was to share information on procedures and legislations on burning the veld and creating fire breaks.

The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (Dardlea) recently gathered farmers for an engagement on ways to manage and deal with veld fires.

Dardlea’s spokesperson, Zanele Shabangu, said the aim is to empower the farmers on veld fire management. On August 10, the farming community of Nkalane, between eManzana and Tjakastad in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality, had a meeting.

During the event there were various presentations done.
“The officials were there to empower the interactive farmers on veld and pasture management, synchronisation and calving and calf management, land care and conservation agriculture, disaster management, climate conditions, conservation of agricultural resources act and economics and business development,” said Shabangu.

On August 8, they visited Standerton in the Lekwa Local Municipality for the event.
They gathered at the Walter Kinnear Park Office.
“The presenters shared information on procedures and legislations on burning the velds, when and how to establish fire breaks, the importance of membership with firefighting associations around Lekwa and disaster management. This includes tips on preventing veld fires, and implements and herbicides to be used,” said Shabangu.
