Public transport in KaBokweni inoperable due to protest action

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison has condemned the protest and advised these community members to report their grievances through the correct channels.

Enraged community members blockaded the KaBokweni road in Ngodini this morning, August 11, due to a lack of water supply.

This has led to public transport, such as busses and taxis, being inoperable.

The protesters are demanding that the City of Mbombela’s executive mayor, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, address them about the water issues faced by the some communities in the area today.

Some of the protesters said they have resorted to buying water to fill their JoJo tanks, which is quite expensive. “We want the mayor to give us a clear indication of when the issue of the lack of water will be addressed. We cannot live without water. We will not clear the streets until she comes,” one of the protesters said.

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has condemned the protest action. “It is a pity that the community cannot exercise their rights the correct way. This protest has inconvenienced daily commuters. We plead with the community to report their grievances to the responsible parties instead of blockading roads.”
