Bushbuckidge dancing classes keeps youth off the streets

Three community members united for a dancing initiative called One Sound One Team, which aims to allow the youth to showcase their talents through dancing, singing and poetry.

As a way to remove young people from the streets, three community members are presenting dance classes.
The initiative is called One Sound One Team. It gets youngsters geared up while keeping them busy after school and during school holidays.

Akani Mkansi, Winky Khosa and Again Nkosi said they wanted young people in their rural community to be protected from social ills, such as substance abuse, rape, teenage pregnancy and violence.

During the classes, the participants get to showcase their talent through dancing, singing and poetry. They meet every day after school.
The programme commenced last year. Mkansi said the plan is to equip the youngsters in rural areas with skills.

“This is also a way to build their confidence. We want them to realise their strengths so that they can make an impact in their respective lives and career paths. We do not only focus on dancing, but also assist them with homework and assignments, do team development, and assist less fortunate girls by hosting a sanitary towels drive.’’

According to him, they go around the community looking for young people with hidden talents. They are currently using a local church as their studio.
“Our dream is to have our own studio, with equipment such as music instruments, a stage and lighting.”
Mkansi said he believes these kids have a bright future ahead of them, and with proper guidance, they can achieve their dreams.
