Female Mbombela DJ aims to conquer male-dominated industry

Nontobeko 'Nonto M' Mathebula said she has overcame many challenges as a female DJ. She hopes to establish a media hub that will nurture young talents.

Some Nsikazians may know her and her sweet voice taking over the airwaves as a radio content producer and presenter on RISE fm.

Nontobeko Mathebula is simultaneously taking over the male-dominated DJing industry as Nonto M.

Originally from Barberton, the gorgeous Mathebula said she fell in love with music after she got into radio at BCR FM.

“I have been entering the DJing scene for at least five years. I fell in love with music and I have been working myself up to a breakthrough as a DJ. I am inspired by the likes of DJ Zoe, DJ Mami and the renowned DJ Zinhle.”

She said it had been quite challenging to penetrate the industry, but thanked her parents for keeping her focused on the way to make a living off her passions. She was raised by strict parents, her mother being a domestic worker and her father a miner.

“There are a lot of challenges to being a female DJ, especially in Mbombela. Everyone knows one another, so sometimes it is hard to convince some people to put me on the line-up of a certain social event because someone does not know me as a DJ.

“In my opinion as a woman, I have to work 10 times extra to prove myself than a male DJ. The industry in Mpumalanga is too different, but it is slowly improving compared to other provinces and cities.”

Mathebula said while she is building her brand as a showstopper on the decks by consistence in practicing and mastering her skills, she is also an avid celebrator of women. She is embarking on women empowerment as a motivational speaker.

She said, however, the ultimate goal is to establish a media hub that will educate youngsters about opportunities in media and to nurture their talents. Mathebula encouraged the young people in Nsikazi to never stop dreaming and learn sustainable ways to achieve their dreams.

“My dreams keep me going even through the most difficult situations. Life will never be easy, but our dreams will always be valid. The best way to work towards our dreams is to connect with people who are already living the dream and getting to know their story.”
