2023 World Gold Panning Championship hits Pilgrim’s Rest

The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation said it is ready to welcome more than 20 countries to participate in this unique championship.

The Mpumalanga MEC for culture, sport and recreation, Thandi Shongwe, said the provincial government is well prepared to host the 2023 World Gold Panning Championships in Pilgrim’s Rest.

The championships are set to run from Sunday August 6 until Saturday August 12. Altogether 21 countries will compete.

Shongwe said this championship marks a significant moment for South Africa as the world’s attention turns to our great nation. The event promises to be a thrilling competition, showcasing the skill and dedication of the participants from around the globe.

“We are very excited that this day has finally come. We did a lot of preparations since we won the rights to host this world championship. I am confident the 21 nations and the spectators from all over the world will feel the welcoming spirit of the people of South Africa in general and in particular the warm hands of the people of Mpumalanga,” she said.

The opening ceremony will take place on Sunday, when Shongwe will deliver a keynote address. This will be followed by a street parade through the historic town of Pilgrim’s Rest.
