Bushbuckridge communities benefit from much-needed donations on Mandela Day

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison and executive mayor of the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality handed over some houses and title deeds to the community members in celebration of Mandela Day.

International Nelson Mandela Day came with a thrill for some communities, including Mkhuhlu and Marite in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM).

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, and the BLM’s executive mayor, Cllr Sylvia Nxumalo, led various programmes that benefited some community members, in celebrating this day on Tuesday July 18. They honoured Mandela Day under the theme ‘Together, let’s fight crime and road carnage.’

They handed over eight RDP houses and food parcels in Mkhuhlu’s Ward 1 and 3. Thereafter, they and other stakeholders cleaned up an illegal dumpsite and attended a roadblock on the R536 to educate motorists about road safety.

The festivities continued at the Mkhuhlu Stadium, when they handed over 422 title deeds and whistles used for crime prevention to community members.

The day ended with a stakeholder engagement. Shongwe and Nxumalo interacted with role players in the fight against crime at the Marite Community Hall.

Shongwe said Marite is the area in the province with the most cases of murder, carjacking, house and business robberies and mob justice.
