Hazyview man finds he never was on waiting list for RDP house

The Department of Human Settlements has instructed Dumisane Mafuwane from Madras near Hazyview to reapply for an RDP house, as his name was nowhere to be found on its database.

Dumisane Mafuwane will have to be patient for a while longer before he obtains an RDP house so that he can reunite with his family in Madras.

The Department of Human Settlements has instructed him to reapply for the house, as his name was not on the database.

He claims, however, that he has registered for the house and that he had been in and out of the human settlements offices over the past five years. “I am shocked that my name is not on the database; I do not think I will get a house. Since they advised me to re-register for the house, I will go back and do that, hoping this time they will speed up the processes. I want my family to come back so that we can be under one roof, since my wife and kids were forced to move out and stay with family for their own safety, as our shack is not safe at all,” Mafuwane said.

He also asked local business owners for a job, or to help him build a house for his family.

The spokesperson for the provincial Department of Human Settlements, Freddy Ngobe, said every potential and eligible applicant submits an application to their respective municipal offices for consideration. The department only processes applications received from localities by examining them to prioritise special groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities, child-headed households and special cases.

“Mafuwane needs to get his local councillor to assist him to make an application for consideration to be captured as a recipient on the system. The department will likely include him in an ongoing project or extend the scope. Furthermore, we call on stakeholders such as business or able individuals to also intervene in similar cases,” he said.
