Destitute family in desperate need of RDP house in Madras

The family claimed that they have applied for RDP house several times with no luck.

A 45-year-old unemployed man and his family are in dire need of better shelter, especially with winter on the way.
Dumisane Mafuwane said he has lost all hope of a proper home for his family, after having repeatedly registered and providing proof of his predicament for a government house several times, without any luck.

His wife and children have been forced to move out of their dilapidated dwelling. They fear for their safety, and have to live with relatives.
Mafuwane told Mpumalanga News the shack they were living in, is not safe at all and can collapse any time. “My wife and two kids were forced to stay with relatives to be safe. I, however, cannot just pack up and go, as I do not have anywhere to go. Being unemployed worsens the situation.”

According to Mafuwane, food and clothes are always extremely difficult to come by, and the family depends on a social grant for the two kids and handouts from community members.
“If we could get a better house, food and clothes, I would be a happier man, especially if I could get a job. I would then be able to build a proper and big enough house for my family and provide for them,” Mafuwane said.

As for a RDP house, he claims he was told he does not qualify, but was later informed his new house was issued in Casteel, far from his village. “I am not familiar with that village, and the house was never handed over to me. I was shocked to hear that I now have a house, and tried to follow up, but nothing came of it.

I was later informed that I needed to reregister, which I did, but so far nothing has happened, and I was told I am still on the waiting list,” Mafuwane said.

The spokesperson for human settlements, Freddy Ngobe, said they would check Mafuwane’s application before he would be able to give a full response.
The department said anyone who needs assistance with any of these issues, can contact 060 657 3741.
