MEC urges the public to obey road rules during Metro FM Awards weekend in Mbombela

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, said law enforcement and other members will be deployed to various locations to ensure that guests and participants are safe.

The much-anticipated and government-endorsed Metro FM Music Awards event is expected to create great hype this weekend.

The Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, said this will also strengthen tourism in the province, particularly Mbombela, where the awards and other related activities will be hosted from Thursday to Saturday, May 4 to 6.

Traffic volumes are expected to increase and many people are expected to visit from other provinces and neighbouring countries. Shongwe warned those who attend the event and other related festivities to obey the rules of the road and to drive with great caution to avoid crashes.

He said law enforcement and other members of the security cluster will be strategically deployed to ensure that patrons and participants are safe and in order. “While we are all excited and looking forward to this weekend, let us use the road cautiously and enjoy ourselves responsibly. We do not want to see any person losing their lives due to reckless driver behaviour. Roads are shared spaces. Let us all be considerate towards all road users,” he said.

Shongwe reminded all law enforcement officers to show no leniency to those who break the law. “Those who are caught drinking in public or driving while they are drunk, will be arrested.”

He called on liquor traders or tavern owners to comply with the conditions of their licences. “Taverns must close and open on time, unless temporary permits have been arranged with the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. The members of the public need to be vigilant and wary of any opportunistic criminals who may want to prey on patrons.”

Shongwe also appealed to communities to report any suspicious activities or people to the police, including those who attempt to sell fake tickets to unsuspecting members of the public.
