Provincial EFF says budget speech does not give hope to the people of Mpumalanga

The EFF's provincial leader, Collen Sedibe, said the lack of capacity within is a serious problem and that the non-spending of funds affects service delivery.

Following the 2023/24 provincial budget speech by the MEC for finance, economic development and tourism, Nompumelelo Hlophe, at the Provincial Legislature on March 7, the official opposition party, the Mpumalanga EFF, said the speech does not give any hope to the people of the province.

The EFF’s provincial leader, Collen Sedibe, said, “While we have seen that they have started with the budget adjustment for 2022/23, within it, most of the departments’ budgets have been decreased as the results of non-spending. This means no services reach our people on the ground, because that money is meant for service delivery.

When they allocate you money for this financial year and you do not spend it, it does not mean that when they allocate it to you for the next year, you will make it, because you have already stifled the service delivery as these funds could have been channeled to houses, clinics, addition classrooms, roads and all those necessities in the communities.”

Sedibe said the lack of capacity within the government is a serious problem, as well as the political influence and interest in tenders.
“Most of the money that is being spent is because of the big projects. Everyone wants to put a hand in, and that results in poor services and delays.”
