Mpumalanga Department of Education hosts provincial school athletics championship

The department said the athletes who performed well during these championships will represent the province at the nationals.

The Department of Education hosted a provincial school athletics championship at Lillian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda on March 11.

According to the provincial education spokesperson, Gerald Sambo, it was a beautiful display of talent, strength and endurance as school athletes competed during the provincial Secondary Schools Athletics Championships.

The sport programme promotes unity among learners as athletes from various schools, backgrounds and cultures gathered in Secunda to demonstrate their athletics prowess.

“The provincial school athletics had various sporting codes featured in this championship, including long, triple and high jumps, shot-put, discus and javelin, sprints and hurdles for boys and girls under the age of 15, 17 and 19, as well as learners with special educational needs.”

Sambo said the championships are a culmination of the school’s athletics programme following competitions at an interschool, circuit, district and provincial level. “The province has used this sporting event to select a team that will represent it at the national level. Athletics form part of the curriculum enrichment programmes, which contribute towards the development of physical fitness that has a positive impact on their health and wellness.”

Sambo said Mpumalanga’s finest will proceed to represent the province in the national championships scheduled to be held in Germiston in April. “The Department of Education congratulates all athletes who have taken part and wishes all those who have been selected well.”
