Mbombela creative artist lives for music and poetry

Siwakhile Thomo-Sithole released a new EP and will be participating in more poetry shows to share his passion for poetry.

“Being a musician and a poet is my mission. I believe art runs in my blood,” said the multi-skilled Siwakhile Thomo-Sithole, also known as Swa the Last.

Thomo-Sithole said he has been writing songs, rapping and taking part in poetry recitals since 2017. However, his interest in these performing arts goes back to when he was nine.

“I used to imitate my favourite rapper, Eminem. He made me fall in love with rap music and I have always worked towards sharpening my skills,” he said.

His latest project is an EP, It’s not you, it’s me, a showcase of his rap talent and a bit of comedy. He released the project on February 14.

“All five songs on the EP are fun songs. It is dedicated to the women who demand financial support from their boyfriends, but do not want do anything in return. This is a call for equality,” said Thomo-Sithole.

The musician, based in Mbombela, said his loyal listeners love the song “Indoda Must” on the EP, and he is engaging with other local musicians to do a remix of the song.

The EP comes after his debut album titled Awakening, released in 2020.

“I had to release the EP for rap music lovers to enjoy while I cook up another EP to be released this year, too. It will be called Revelation. It will reveal or expose parts of me that most of my listeners are not aware of, relating to the passing of my father and birth of my son,” he said.

Thomo-Sithole said rap music and poetry are interlinked.

“The difference between the two is rhythm. I remember I wrote my first poem about a girl I was trying to charm. I managed to express my love for her through poetry. The same can be done through music.”

Most my poems are inspired by love and general emotions. I have also learnt to write poems and music from other people’s perspectives,” he said.

The 27-year-old said he has quite a few dreams he would like to pursue.
