Mpumalanga MEC warns of RDP housing fraudsters

A social media page recently misled the public about RDP houses being available for sale.

The MEC for human settlements, Speedy Mashilo, has warned beneficiaries of RDP houses to be wary of fraudsters on social media.

The Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements recently learnt about a fake social media page aimed at misleading the public about RDP houses being available for sale. The page also uses the MEC’s nametag.

“This is not the first time the MEC’s name has been used to unduly and corruptly solicit money from vulnerable persons. The call was made for such acts to discontinue, or the people responsible for them will face the full wrath of the law,” Mashilo said.

“For more than once, my name has been used in these criminal groups, and I distanced myself from them as I do now. It is my considered position that I must open a case of fraud with the police in order to investigate this matter. The department has on numerous occasions, through its platforms and campaigns, maintained that RDP houses are not for sale.

No person should be part of an illegal transaction that involves the selling of government low-cost houses. Government battles with the ever-increasing housing backlog, and we are determined to see it reduced and afford people a chance to self-build. Hence, we are servicing more sites so people can build houses of their choosing on those stands.”

Those who wish to apply for government low-cost housing, should visit their local municipality for applications.
