No arrests were made on recent Hazyview CIT heist

Investigations are under way following the CIT heist and security guard who was killed.

The Mpumalanga SAPS said no arrests have been made following the cash-in-transit heist on the R40 near Hazyview on Wednesday January 25.

On Monday January 30, a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said an investigation is still under way.

“During the incident, a security guard who also worked as a co-driver, was fatally shot. Meanwhile, some other guards sustained minor injuries. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. According to information, a group of about 15 armed suspects attacked security guards who were travelling towards Hazyview in two vans. The suspects are said to have used their Mercedes-Benz sedan to collide head-on with the cash van. They further fired some shots at the guards, resulting in one security guard losing his life after sustaining serious injuries.

“The suspects reportedly robbed the guards of their firearms and detonated some explosives. The Mercedes-Benz as well as the security van were destroyed by the fire during the incident. The suspects are said to have helped themselves. They reportedly took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in a Jeep Cherokee, a Kia SUV and a Ford Ranger double-cab bakkie. They reportedly took to the direction of Masoyi, and the police and some other security forces joined in the pursuit. There was a second shoot-out between the suspects and law enforcement agencies.”

Mohlala said one of the robbed firearms, a revolver, was later recovered on the scene and an undisclosed amount of cash was found in the nearby bushes.

“While the police were busy processing the scene, a Sanral employee responsible for cleaning up the roads, was found in possession of an undisclosed amount of cash, which is suspected to have been stolen out of the safe of the damaged cash van. The 32-year-old was immediately arrested on charges of theft,” he said.
