Hazyview matriculant is the best in technical mathematics in SA

Lucas Lebogang Chiloane, from a small village in Hazyview, was not only the best matric learner in technical mathematics in Mpumalanga in 2022, but also in South Africa.

He attended the national matric results announcement event in Gauteng on Thursday January 19. This 19-year-old said it was his desire to have a better life and to bring change to his family that kept him working hard.

He will be studying mechanical engineering at the University of Johannesburg this year. This aspiring engineer attended Hazyview Comprehensive School and said his teacher had told him that the only way to achieve this dream was to work very hard in school.

“My technical mathematics teacher, Bheki Mngwenya, told me I needed to focus in getting a 100% in his subject so that I could study the course I want, and for me to have a better future. This conversation reminded me of a former learner of our school, Philliph Mnisi, who was invited to the national matric results announcement event in 2019. I always wanted to be like him, and I saw how working hard at his studies opened doors for him. I wanted the same opportunities.”

Chiloane said he appreciated all the guidance his teacher had given in class. “He is a great teacher and very professional.”

Chiloane stays with his grandmother and father. According to him, as a way to thank them, he wants to get them out of the village and move them to the city when he completes his studies.

“My father does piece jobs and projects, and my grandmother is 96. I would like to change our lives and make things better. I have an older sister and younger one,” he said.
He said his greatest wish was for his grandmother to benefit from his achievements so that she could reap the rewards for raising them.
