KwaMhlanga police on manhunt for escaped suspect

Bheki Moses Phakathi escaped from police custody while at the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court. 

The KwaMhlanga SAPS is on a manhunt for Bheki Moses Phakathi (29) who escaped from lawful custody at the KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday December 21.

According to a Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Phakathi was being transported for a court appearance.

“It is alleged that on arrival at court, the suspect somehow managed to escape inside the building. It is further indicated that the police chased after him without any success. A case of escape from lawful custody has been opened against the suspect. Another charge of aiding a suspect to escape is being investigated too,” Mohlala said.

He said internal investigations surrounding the circumstances of this escape had also been instituted against certain police members.

“The suspect was initially arrested for five counts of rape, as well as a charge of residential burglary,” Mohlala said.
