Talented Mbombela car spinner fuels the fire of his fans

He wants to dispel the misconception that car spinners are criminals.

On weekends when he is off from work, local car spinner Llewellyn Winkle, entertains crowds and fans with his spinning prowess.
Winkle said he wants to teach communities and dispel the misconception that car spinners are criminals or terrible people who do not abide by the law.

Winkle said spinning cars for him is not only a way to entertain people, but helps him stay away from trouble.
“I am aware that many people equate car-spinning with gangsterism, drugs and violence, but for me it is a safe haven. I have been out of trouble since this keeps me occupied on the weekends and allows me to earn extra money. Although spinning cars has long been connected to gangsterism and was once done to honour those who had perished at the hands of the old regime, it is now more formal and amusing,” he said.
Winkle said he started spinning in 2014.

“I have always been a fan and lover of fast cars from a young age. The smell of a burning tyre and the noise of a revved engine has always given me peace, and this is why I also decided to join and master this sport. I used to attend spinning events and fell for the sport. I started to work at my father’s towing company and I saved up for my first Gusheshe, which I taught myself to spin on the streets, and I was finally recognised and booked for events,” narrated Winkle.

He said he was inspired by the Red Bull Shay’Imoto champion SamSam.
“I drew the inspiration from Samkeliso Thubane, known as Sam Sam. The bravery and how he handles the 325i Gusheshe!” he marvelled.

He concluded by saying that he wants people to know that car spinning is like any other sport.
“If people can support and cheer on the Formula 1 sport and Dakar Rally, why are we victimised? People should stop assuming the worst about Gusheshe spinners, as we are legal and we entertain the people the same way as the F1 does. I am asking people to stop thinking the worst about us as long as we do it safe,” he concluded.
