Deputy minister of transport receives messages of comfort after losing her son and his family in KZN

The Mpumalanga premier called on the public to respect and pray for the family during this difficult time.

The deputy minister of transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, is mourning the death of her six family members, including her son, after a tragic accident on Sunday July 17.

Chikunga’s spokesperson, Collen Msibi, said, “Her son, daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren died in the accident on the N11 in KwaZulu-Natal.”

He said Chikunga travelled to KZN to establish the full facts. “Further details about the accident will be released once full information is available from local authorities.”

Msibi said the family is pleading for space and privacy until the facts are determined.

Chikunga is an ANC member who has served in Mpumalanga, and a resident of Elukwatini.

Messages of condolences have been pouring in from locals since a statement confirming the accident was released by the family.

The Mpumalanga premier, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, has expressed her sincere condolences to Chikunga.

“We are very shocked and saddened by the passing of the family members of Chikunga. We are still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy and we share the pain and agony with the family,” said Mtshweni-Tsipane.

The premier called on the people of Mpumalanga to pray for the family during this difficult time.

The MEC for public works, roads and transport, Mohita Latchminarain, also released a statement saying she was shocked and devastated about the fatal road accident.

“It is more saddening due to the fact that Chikunga is one who is always advocates and is passionate about road safety in the country, and today she has lost family members in a car accident. The pain and loss of life can never be easily removed. Life is irreplaceable and her family will need all the support we can provide.
