Ehlanzeni District calls for budgets from local municipalities to fight GBVF

Similar meeting sessions will be conducted until suitable ways to combat GBVF have been found and implemented.

In a bid to intensify its fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), the Ehlanzeni District Municipality (EDM) has asked its four local municipalities to raise at least R1.5m each, which will go towards this cause.

Speaking during a marathon session with stakeholders and the four municipalities on Tuesday June 21 in the EDM’s council chambers, Ehlanzeni district’s municipal manager, Dr Nontobeko Mahlalela, and general manager for strategic planning, research and innovations, Dr Sipho Tibane, used this platform to also encourage private stakeholders to form a partnership with the municipality to play an effective role in preventing and creating awareness campaigns against the scourge of GBVF.

“We have already raised about R900 000 as a district and we would like to call upon our local municipalities to raise at least R1.5m each so we can create programmes that will ensure the safety of our people,” said Tibane.

Tibane said they would continue to host such sessions until solutions to find ways to prevent GBVF have been found.

“We are expecting to have follow-up meetings to find more solutions to prevent GBVF, and we hope to get institutions that will support our vision. We need to create safe platforms for women and students, since we house the three major tertiary institutions in the district in which our young people are enrolled. We also need to ensure good security in the student residences around the district and provide better services for our youth, so that they are not easily lured by economically empowered people,” said Mahlalela.

Mahlalela urged the public to report GBVF cases to the police and seek help from institutions such as Thuthuzela Care Centre and GRIP.
