Committee to tackle youth issues in Mpumalanga Province

Some of the concerns the youth raised were youth unemployment, inaccessibility to the National Youth Development Agency offices in areas such as the greater Nsikazi region, and the scourge of gender-based violence that has seen many young people kidnapped, raped and killed.

A committee has been delegated by the Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane to address the issues raised by some young people during a peaceful protest at the provincial government headquarters at the beginning of this month.

Mtshweni-Tsipane was given at least seven days to respond to the memorandum received by the director general, Michael Makhume. The premier’s spokesperson, Sibongile Mkani-Mpolweni, said the committee had met last Friday.

“The Office of the Premier has constituted a committee comprised of members from the youth march as well as representatives from the different departments. This committee is tasked with the responsibility to address all issues as raised by the youth forum,” MkaniMpolweni said.

A community youth leader, Tebogo Sekgobela, said young people, especially in the Ehlanzeni district, are pleased that Mtshweni-Tsipane seems to have taken their concerns seriously. He said 10 young people were delegated to attend the meeting.

“The results of the meeting were that we have to draft a programme of action that will be presented to the premier’s committee, and we will meet again with them on June 22. We do have hope from the consultation we had that the provincial government will help us,” Sekgobela said.
