Kumbaya Africa Individuals Chess League players continue to battle

It has been almost two months since the league started, and the players are intent to make their mark as they compete in the games.

The fourth leg of the Kumbaya Africa Individuals Chess League took place on Saturday June 18 at Meridian Karino Primary School in KaMagugu.
The first round was on May 7 and the final round of the league will be on July 30. The Coach Chess Academy, under Mpumalanga Chess, is the host of this league.

The prize money for first place in prestige is R3 000, second is R2 000 and third R1 500. In section A, first place gets R2 000, second R1 500 and third R1 000.

This is a 14-round chess league played over 12 weeks. The players are divided into two sections: prestige and section A (juniors).


In section A, Dicken Nkosi is in the lead. He now has nine points out of the nine games played.
He is closely followed by Alen Jameson, who has eight points, and Fadyl Macanja with seven points after losing only to Dicken and Alen.

In the prestige section, Muzi Nkambule is in the lead with seven points followed by Tholo Phumuza also at seven points. In third place is Kenneth Manana with a score of six points out of the total nine games played.

The academy’s Eddy Bhila said, “We have five more rounds of chess to play and look forward to seeing other players rising to the challenge as anything is still possible in both sections. Players are growing in strength as they play in this league and hopefully they will rise to the top before it ends.”
