Protesters in Marongwane burn three trucks

After the previous service delivery protest the executive mayor, Sylvia Nxumalo, condemned the acts of criminality and public disorder.

Marongwane community members torched three trucks last night, Tuesday May 24.

The community used the trucks to block the R40 near Bushbuckridge in advancing their service delivery protest.

Following the burning of two trucks carrying timber loads in the past week as a way of raising their concerns yet again, this community blockaded the road to raise their dissatisfaction with the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.

The angry protesters said that they want their demands to be met concerning service delivery or they will continue protesting.

The acting spokesperson of the municipality, Claiton Khosa, said the municipality is aware of the issues and it is working tirelessly to find viable solutions.

“The municipality has already alluded that concerning the electrification of the mushrooming residential area, a contractor has been appointed and will resume work in the next financial year. The same goes for the issue of water which is expected to be done in the new financial year.”

“The municipality views the situation as pure criminal acts and has called upon the law enforcement agencies to mobilise all resources at their disposal to bring the perpetrators to book. Both the municipality and the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) have engaged the community, but this is pure criminality and lawlessness. The plans are to wait for the above-mentioned period for work to resume as budgeted. The DPWRT has also highlighted that the road in question will be done in the period highlighted it.”
