Association decreases its taxi fares for October

In honouring and celebrating Transport Month, the Top Star Taxi Association reduced their taxi fares for their passengers.

According to the association, they decided to encourage the use of public transport, especially during the month of October, which is observed as Transport Month.

Local trips are being charged at a mere R10 per passenger. The association said it used to celebrate this month by donating food parcels, school shoes and school uniforms to the needy in certain areas around Nsikazi.

The Transport Month Campaign is an annual feature on the calendar of the Department of Transport and it was launched on October 2005 with an aim of raising awareness of the important role of transport in the economy, and to invite participation from the civic society and business, in providing a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system for the country.

The association’s spokesperson, John Mavundla, said, “We are giving back to our passengers during Transport Month. In past years we used to do donations to various organisations and schools within our local areas.”

He said they were amazed at the number of people who came out in support of their initiative.

“We are still amazed and shocked with the numbers of passengers we had to transport in the past week. We have never had such numbers of passengers on a normal daily basis. We noticed that our passengers do want to support us, but the sad truth is that our prices are so expensive due to aspects beyond our control. But our passengers need to understand that to maintain the taxis and to service them, including petrol, is very costly,” he said.
