Shots fired at picketing Cosatu members at Matsamo Border

They will ensure to fulfil their mandate of being there by handing their memorandum to the authorities.

Throngs of Cosatu members and its alliance partners are picketing at three border posts leading to the Kingdom of eSwatini, in support of the democratic changes in that country. These are the Golela Border Post leading to Lavumisa, and the Oshoek and Matsamo border posts.

Mpumalanga News learned that members of the SAPS had allegedly fired random shots without warning at the crowd at the Matsamo Border Post, injuring many at the process. “The people of eSwatini are demanding democracy and we want to see the real independence of that country. Unfortunately, our members had been shot at close range by the police without any warning. Ambulances are already on the scene giving them medical attention.

“We will try by all means to ensure that we fulfil our mandate of being here by handing our memorandum to the authorities. We want the South African government to engage with Mswati and even boycott his regime,” said Michael Shingane, Cosatu’s deputy president.
