Nkomazi FM goes worldwide on digital app

Seven years ago, a community-based radio station was born out of nothing but a dream.

Now it has come to be known as Nkomazi FM, previously accessible only within the Nkomazi jurisdiction, but currently worldwide.

Keeping up with the times, this people’s station has just launched its digital platform, which will enable listeners from anywhere around the world to tune in and be part of live shows, entertainment and news.

“It’s very simple, really. All you have to do is download our app and follow the easy instructions to tune in anytime and anywhere,” said Makhosi Zulu, the station manager.

He said the move to go digital was influenced by the overwhelming support and response from listeners across the country and even beyond borders.

“Yes, times are changing, and we need to change and adapt as well. But that is not the only reason we decided to go digital. We wanted to accommodate all our listeners from everywhere. You must understand that, for instance, there are Nkomazi residents working and residing in cities such as Mbombela, Tshwane and Johannesburg, who would like to keep abreast of what is happening back home. And we sat down as a team and came up with the idea of going digital,” explained Zulu.

“We are really not there yet in terms of sustainability. We still need funding – serious funding – to be able to continue running and paying our staff timeously and satisfactory. We still need our local businesses to support us,” he appealed.
