Murder suspect hands himself over to police in Nkomazi

Two people were shot and killed in an incident that occurred in KaMaqhekeza near Komatipoort on April 22.

The murder case against Colani Mkhabela (23) has been postponed to May 3 for formal bail application.
Mkhabela briefly appeared before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on April 26.
Two people were shot and killed in an incident that occurred in KaMaqhekeza near Komatipoort on April 22. According to the police, Mkhabela handed himself over as the one who had killed the victims.

He apparently told them a scuffle had broken out between two groups that culminated into a physical fight. He said he then snatched a firearm from another man, shot the two victims and fled the scene. He surrendered himself as well as the firearm
to the authorities at Tonga Police Station a day later.

The acting provincial commissioner of the police, Maj Gen Thulani Phahla, condemned the incident. He encouraged members of the community to use other peaceful ways to settle disagreements.
“We urge members of the public not to take the law in their own hands. Resolve matters in a lawful manner rather than resorting to violence which often results in the loss of life,” he concluded.
