Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, the MEC for culture, sport and recreation, Thandi Shongwe, and various stakeholders attended. Mtshweni-Tsipane delivered the keynote address.

According to Sibongile Nkosi of the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, the celebration showed that the provincial government events benefit all the people of Mpumalanga.

“The provincial government will come with a basket of services to ensure that it leaves a lasting legacy in the community of Balfour. Government will hand over the Balfour Public Library as well as sport attire and equipment.

“Freedom Day commemorates the first democratic elections of 1994 in which all South Africans aged 18 and older, regardless of race, could vote.

This year is the 27th anniversary of that historic day and it is celebrated under the theme, ‘The Year of Charlotte Maxeke: The Meaning of Freedom under Covid-19’.”

The theme honours the life and times of struggle icon, Charlotte Maxeke. This year is her 150th birthday anniversary.
