KaNyamazane Medical Centre helps combat addiction

Dr Gcina Joel Mavuso pleaded with other medical practitioners to join him in fighting the scourge of drugs in Mpumalanga.

Parents shed tears of joy at the graduation ceremony of 44 young people from KaNyamazane  and surroundings who are successfully beating drug addiction daily. They were recently handed certificates of appreciation at the Pentecostal Holiness Church. This comes after the youngsters have successfully conquered drug addiction for the past 12 months.

They participated in a year-long rehabilitation programme offered by  Dr Gcina Joel Mavuso of KaNyamazane Medical Centre,  Sr Genevieve’s Clinic and the Helping Hand People to People Ministry. They also received counselling from a local psychologist, Seraphina Mthombothi. Read: Signs your teenager is using drugs

The day was marked with motivational speeches and the declaratory prayer for the renewal of the youngsters’ minds. Pastors prayed for them, asking for God’s intervention in their lives to remain free from addiction. The speakers thanked Mavuso and his team for allowing the Lord to use them to help the youth of the area to quit drugs amid the strict Covid-19 regulations. Mavuso said this year’s programme was marred by the challenges brought about by the virus.

“There was inadequate meeting space for intake users and their caregivers. We overcame that by gathering outside in an open space behind the surgery every Saturday. We ensured everyone adhered to the Covid-19 regulations while we had sessions with them,” he said. Mavuso thanked the founders of Shiloh Mountain of Prayer, James Mathebula and his wife. They provided meals, paid medical fees and transported six of the candidates from Pienaar who attended the rehabilitation programme. He pleaded with other medical practitioners to join him in fighting the scourge of drugs in Mpumalanga. “I would love to see more doctors offering their services – the more people we have, the better our towns will be,” he said. The parents also thanked KaNyamazane Medical Centre for this initiative.
