UMP warns against scammer

A statement issued by the university states that a man who claims to be working for the university's service centre is alleged to be demanding up to R2 500 from students in order to be registered.

MBOMBELA – The management of the University of Mpumalanga is warning prospective students about a scam doing the rounds about payment for admission at the institution.

A statement issued by the university states that a man who claims to be working for the university’s service centre is alleged to be demanding up to R2 500 from students in order to be registered.

“He lures students and demands that they deposit money into PEP Money Market or eWallet for them to be admitted. The University of Mpumalanga does not demand cash for applications. Potential students are advised of the requirements through official channels. Also students are not admitted without approval from the Registrar’s office. Applicants should apply online and wait for an SMS and a letter confirming their admission,” it reads.

The university aims to reach a target of 18 000 to 20 000 students by the year 2025/26.

Brig Leonard Hlathi, provincial police spokesperson warned people against falling prey to similar scams.

“None of the alleged victims from the university have opened a case with the police. We are warning students and parents and anyone who is looking to be registered at any tertiary institution to be aware of such scammers and bogus colleges.

They should never deposit money to anyone who claims to be from the institution, but follow the correct procedures. We also warn the person doing this to stop, because we will definitely get him and arrest him,” said Hlathi.
