Man suspected of the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl appears in court
The suspect was remanded in custody for a formal bail application and will appear in the same court on September 17.
EMZINONI – A 37-year-old man appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of rape and murder.
His appearance comes after he was suspected to have committed the crime and was taken in for questioning on Monday, September 9, following the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl at Malema Section in Emzinoni township.
The suspect was remanded in custody for a formal bail application and will appear in the same court on September 17.
The girl left home on Sunday morning, September 8 after she was sent to a nearby shop by a neighbour but did not return. Later on the day, her parents together with several community members conducted a search but failed to locate her.
Her body was discovered by a passer-by close to her home, in the early hours of Monday morning, September 9, who then informed the girl’s parents and the incident was reported to the police.
